I have painted seriously
in watercolour for a number of years but also experiment in a variety
of other media, from chalk pastels to oils and inks. For me watercolour
stands out, as it fuels my imagination and frees my senses. At the
same time, it can be the most elusive, unpredictable medium with
which to work, while also being the most volatile.
I like to use transparent
watercolour for its luminosity, but I am not a purist for if the
painting requires it, I'll add a bit of chalk or oil pastel, ink
or gouache. Whether I am working in my studio or on location, I
focus on value first and then colour. I believe value does all the
work but color gets all the glory.
